UCI-EnginesA chess software consists of two components, the graphical user interface (GUI) and the engine, which analyses a position. The Pirat GUI communicates with the Pirat-engine over a proprietary protocol. This protocol is optimized and is not comparable in the slightest with the UCI interface or Winboard interface. Thus the Pirat-engine runs under the Pirat GUI only. The nice thing about UCI Engines or Winboard Engines is that they use a well defined protocol. With the introduction of the UCI-protocol an engine designer does not need to worry about the GUI any longer, since there are GUIs available, supporting this protocol. The Pirat GUI supports the UCI protocol as well. Using an UCI-adapter, which is available via the internet, it is possible to run Winboard Engines under the Pirat. Thus Pirat provides you an option to analyze your correspondence chess position with UCI or Winboard engines. As long as is supported by the Engine you may also play games against those engines under the Pirat-GUI. Of course it is no problem to run other engines against the Pirat-engine in order to test the strength of pirat. In the following example the UCI engine Ruffian is loaded:
