Endgame database

Endgame database

Pirat is able to access endgame tablebases, which return the exact result for all possible endgames with five or less men. Beside the two kings in maximum three other pieces are allowed.

For all tablebases approximately 7GB free disc-space is required.

The Pirat-Software comes without any tablebases, however the database for 3 -, 4 and 5-men is available under the famous ftp-address:

ftp://ftp.cis.uab.edu/pub/hyatt/TB/3-4-5/ (TB: 3, 4, 5)

http://kd.lab.nig.ac.jp/chess/tablebases-online/ (TB: 6)

Starting Pirat the software will ask for the location of the tablebases. In case Pirat is not able to locate the directories of the tablebases, you will be asked to provide the path to the database. If you can’t provide the path to the database, because you did not download the tablebases for 3 and 4 men, then Pirat will generate the tablebases automatically. However the generation of the 3 and 4-men using a 1 GHz Pentium will require around two hours.

In the following example the last white move was d5. Pirat found the result in the tabebase king, rook and pawn against king and rook.
