Diagram print Under DOS chess programs knew if at all diagrams only as embedded pictures, or a king was simply represented by a "K". In the second case the "diagram" was printed out as text. Both solutions were of course unsatisfactory. Print of pictures had the disadvantage that the quality of the result and print rate was poor. Furthermore the size of the diagram was limited as this was hard implemented by the chess programmer. Under Windows things improved a lot. Basically there is an unlimited number of font sets available. After a short while the first font for chess-diagram with a fix width was available (like Courier new; "a" is to be developed just as wide as a "i"). The advantage is that print-jobs will be fast, provide a clean result and diagram size is flexible. Strangely enough there was never a chess-font standard defined. In one example the white king on black field is on position 50 of the character set, another designer uses different offset position. Thus Pirat offers its own diagram set (Chess diagram Pirat). Under the web address http://www.enpassant.dk/chess/fonteng.htm you will find Chess-fonts for free. The designer of Pirat tried hard to support all free available chess-fonts.
Next to the own chess-font (Chess font Pirat), Pirat supports 12 more chess fonts. Above print preview is using Chess Merida. Pirat supports the following font-sets Chess, Chess Berlin, Chess Mark, Chess Marroquin, Chess Maya, Chess Mediaeval, Chess Merida, Chess Millennia D, Chess Millennia l, Chess Motif, Chess Usual and Chess Utrecht. Except minor deviation symbols of the font-sets are placed at the same position. Same applies to chess font Pirat. |
