Database and tournament admin The database-tool comes with a database and a tournament admin window and the administration of games in pgn or pir-format (PGN Admin and PIR Admin). In case database is opened, then depending upon the format the PGN Admin or the PIR Admin gets loaded. Pirat supports the international PGN format and its own PIR format based on the Borland database engine. Games, which are saved in the PGN format, can be opened and read you at each time with a normal text editor. Since pgn-files are readable text-files, without any compression or indices for fast finding of games, the PGN format is not suitable for the handling of large databases. The PGN format is used when creating a correspondence chess tournament, however some additional correspondence chess information are stored as well. The developers of Pirat recommend the PGN format for the use of databases up to 10,000 games only. Using the PIR-format any database size can be handled fast. The developers generated and tested databases with up to 4 million games. The PIR format is supported by many additional useful tools... Average size of a database with 100.000 games:
Games in PIRAT-format are compressed by 1 byte per move; however indices for search function have to be stored as well. Priority for Pirat is speed over disk-space. The decision for speed was easy as disk-space got very inexpensive. Data protection: We recommend regular backups on a second hard-drive. |
